Plex and Serviio can co-exist on the same computer without a problem. Plex has the advantage of having a well designed app that is available on my streaming players and Smart TVs, as well as the web interface for streaming via a browser. Thanks for the input.Plex and Serviio are two similar but separate programs. I think different hardware just has its purposes. In the end, the advice to get different hardware I think was a great call. It should be very similar in performance to the Roku I just picked up. I also have an Amazon Firestick on the way too so I can test it. Roku has a great product and price perfect for the market. I think more than $50 is too much at this time for a product to do what I'm looking for. I just ordered two more and I expect more will be on there way later. I have not tried that only because I wanted to try out the Roku with the remote. Others are talking about how the RP seems to work well with using Kodi as an OS and then using the Plex plugin on that. However, I go out and pick up a Roku Streaming Stick (4K) for less than $50 and my experience was 100% different (in a good way). I bought my RPs for about $50-$60 each (after buying the board, a case, and memory to go in it. However, I completely disagree with your logic about buying cheaper (or less expensive) hardware being an issue. I have since grabbed a Roku streaming stick and 100% love the experience so far. Well, I'd rather call it inconvenience than an issue. Which may or may not be an issue for you. If PMP is not your thing, then Plex addon for Kodi works great for me.Īnd then Emby or Jellyfin or Streama are other popular options.įor inside and outside - the only thing you will miss by combining Plex for outside with DLNA\Samba for inside is probably watch history. Plex has clients for almost every devices, I bet even a fridge with a screen will support it. Second is of course Plex, there are just no other alternatives that have as wide of a client support. But it will only decode on the client, server is not under any load. It's still technically server-client model, as files are hosted on the server and streamed to your client. I love Plex, but I would use Kodi for TVs and stream from DLNA or Samba share (Plex has DLNA). You already have a lot of answers, but here are some more thoughts :)įor in-house TV streaming there's really nothing better than just direct-playing things using Kodi. Just looking for everyone's thoughts on what they use and if they do something similar to what I do in my environment. I would like to be able to have users so each user can have their own subscribed shows/movies and keep a separate played list.I need to be able to set my Raspberry Pis up as clients to access the media. ![]() ![]() I would think I need a server-client model approach so I only have to manage content in one place.I need to be able to access the media content remotely. My alternative would need to be able to account for the following. The only solution is to reboot the Raspberry Pi. For some reason, the video just hangs to the entire interface. Often, when I turn on my TV than try to use my remote to navigate, I can hear it doing things in the background (I can even play a show by randomly clicking things).Fast forwarding and Rewinding is a nightmare and usually freezes the playback to where it requires you to stop and then resume playback. Two of the most annoying things I experience with it are. It seems to have very little development on it. The only real issue I have with Plex is the PMP product. In the past, I have used Kodi and LOVED IT! However, I wanted to move to a server-client model and the idea of Plex was (at the time) the answer to all my needs. The alternatives I have found are ones like. I have been looking into alternatives but was hoping to get some input from the community before having to spend a bunch of time testing each one out. It is always buggy on all my Raspberry Pis and I spend more time rebooting the Pi then I do watching media it feels like. However, I'm at my wits' end with the very underdeveloped PMP. Then I have a big server to just host the Plex server service. ![]() Mostly I have a bunch of embedded PMPs set up around the house on every TV. I have been using Plex now for some time.
